One of the things I wanted to emphasize with my project is the reflection part of all learning experiences. I wanted students to make connections between the things they already know, the things they learn, and the way things are interconnected. I did this with a couple of different projects. My first project is a zoo journal, which is a reflection on what students already know and are looking forward to seeing when we visit the zoo. Once we return from the trip, students compare and contrast a couple of the mammals that they have seen, and then reflect on the experience. I also show the students an example of what their journal might look like.
Once I had completed this project I tried it again with Christmas picture books. Students could record their thoughts before reading, compare a couple of the books after reading, and reflect on the experience afterward.
